from a local caring funeral director
Interested in a Direct Cremation?
A direct cremation is a simple option where the cremation takes place without a funeral service or mourners present.
This choice can be a more affordable way to say goodbye, as it removes the need for expenses like funeral cars, a full-length crematorium service, a minister or celebrant, flowers, and service sheets.
However, while a direct cremation can ease financial worries, it’s worth considering that even a modest funeral service offers a chance for emotional support and togetherness, which can be deeply comforting during the grieving process.
It’s important to reflect on what feels right for both the wishes of your loved one and the needs of family and friends left behind.
If you’d like to explore your options or need someone to guide you through the decision-making process, we’re here to help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out—our team is always ready to offer support and understanding.
Why choose a direct cremation with A.H. Cheater Funeral Directors?
At A.H. Cheater, we understand how important it is to say goodbye to your loved one in a way that feels right for you. Whatever your wishes or budget, we’re here to guide you and support you every step of the way during this difficult time.
Choosing a direct cremation with a trusted local funeral director like us comes with many thoughtful benefits. It offers a more personal touch compared to some of the national providers you might see advertised on TV, ensuring care and compassion remain at the heart of everything we do.
Your Loved One is Cared for Locally
After the death of your loved one, our team will bring them into our care and they will remain in our purpose built facilities in our Romsey or North Baddesley funeral home until the day of the cremation.
Time to Say Goodbye
If you choose a direct cremation with us we ensure you feel involved in your loved ones' send off. Whether that’s dressing your loved one in their own clothes, putting special items in the coffin or simply spending time with them in our private chapel of rest to say your final goodbye.
Here to Help and Support You
You can visit our funeral home where you will be met by our caring, compassionate and experienced team to help you with the funeral arrangements. It’s our role to arrange the funeral as per your wishes, and we’ll guide and support you through every stage.
A Dignified and Respectful Cremation
On the day of the cremation, we carefully transport your loved one to Test Valley Crematorium in Romsey. In private, and without mourners present, we lay the deceased onto the catafalque, we bow our heads as a mark of respect, and the coffin is then taken for cremation. After the cremation, you can choose for the ashes to be scattered in the garden of remembrance at the crematorium, or we will collect and store the ashes for you until the time is right to collect them.
If you would like to arrange a direct cremation for a loved one, please contact us, and we will help you every step of the way.

Prefer a cremation with a service?
Our Chapel Service
At A. H. Cheater, we have a garden chapel room that can be used to host a small service for up to 20 people. This allows you to say goodbye to your loved one before they are taken to Test Valley Crematorium for an unattended direct cremation.
A Simple Funeral
You may decide that you prefer a traditional cremation funeral at the crematorium. Our Simple Funeral provides a simple cremation send-off at a lower cost by limiting some of the options and choices available to you compared to our fully tailored funeral options.
Arrange Your Own Service
After a direct cremation, you may wish to arrange your own service at a time and place that is more personal to you and your family. This personal service could include the scattering or interment of ashes.
Create a Lasting Memorial
After a direct cremation and the ashes have been returned to you, you may wish to keep the ashes in a beautiful ashes urn or create a lasting memorial such as a piece of jewellery.
